Biography

Huang Yingjie showed considerable talent in athletics as a child. At the age of 20, he acclaimed some fame in his region after winning a pentathlon at the Taishan County Games. In 1935, Huang was admitted to the Department of Agriculture of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou. During the trials for the 1936 Olympic team, he broke the national record for men’s 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.7, a record that persisted for 18 years. In Berlin, Huang competed in the high hurdles and the 4 x 100 m relay but failed to qualify for the next round in both events. He was also an excellent volleyball player representing China at the 1930 and 1934 Far Eastern Games.

After graduating, Huang Yingjie initially taught at his department before becoming a physical education teacher at the Law School in 1940. After the war, Huang became a civil servant of the Guangdong Provincial Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Control Institute. In the 1950s, he moved to Hong Kong with his family coaching the Hong Kong South China Athletic Association. Two decades later, Huang immigrated into Canada and died there at the age of 87.
