Biography

Edy Schmidiger was a native of Bern and began boxing at an early age. A member of Athletic-Box-Club-Bern (ABCB), Schmidiger quickly made a name for himself as a young up and coming boxer in the mid-1930s from competing in local and state competitions. He also was named by newspapers as a possible Olympic team prospect for Berlin 1936. It was, however, after moving to Zürich in the early 1940s where he found his greatest success in the sport.

Representing the colours of Boxclub Zürich, Schmidiger was the Swiss national lightweight title holder in 1943, 1944, 1946, 1947, and 1948. In the latter year, he finally gained selection to represent his country at the Olympic Games in London, competing in the lightweight class. There, he defeated Luis Gutiérrez of Peru in the first round in a walkover, but lost to Belgian Jos Vissers in round two. A druggist by profession, Schmidiger retired from active competition around 1950 and moved back to Bern by 1955.
