Biography

During the 1930s Hildegarde Švarce was one of the best figure skaters in Latvia and won nine national titles in the pairs competition (1931, 1933–40). In 1934 Švarce and her future husband Eduards Gešels finished ninth in the pairs at the European Championships, before finishing 17th in the same event at the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Olympics. When World War II broke out the pair moved to Germany, where they were married in 1942. Two years later, however, Švarce was killed during an air raid on the city of Heilbronn.
