Biography

Göte Blomqvist, Erik Johansson and Stig Carlsson are still considered the best line in Södertälje SK’s club history. They were also instrumental in the Swedish success during the early 1950s, scoring more than 200 goals in about 50 matches together with the Swedish national team. Like Johansson and Carlsson, Blomqvist played his entire career from 1946-62 with Södertälje SK, winning Swedish titles with them in 1953 and 1956. He was also the leading goal scorer at the Swedish Championships three years in a row from 1951-53, and holds the record of most goals scored (8) during one match at the Swedish Championships.

Internationally, Blomqvist was capped 108 times with the Swedish national team between 1947-57 and scored 68 goals. He won an Olympic bronze in 1952, was a World Champion in 1953 and won a World Championships bronze in 1954. He was also a European Champion in 1952 and 1953, while taking silver in 1954 and bronze at the 1950 European Championships. After finishing his sporting career, Blomqvist worked as an ice hockey coach with Morgårdshammars IF, BK Remo and Enhörna IF, before returning to Södertälje SK in late 1960s. At first he worked as a children’s coach with Södertälje and after 1972 worked as an assistant coach with Södertälje’s senior team. Blomqvist was awarded the Stora Grabbars Märke (Big Boys’ Badge) #39 in ice hockey, a Swedish sports honorary award created in 1928 by Bo Ekelund.
