Biography

The son of a Civil Servant, Rollo Brandt was educated at Oundle School before going to St. John’s College, Cambridge where he was a good all-round sportsman. He excelled at both rowing and rugby, and in the latter guided St. John’s to some memorable victories over highly-rated college teams.

Brandt joined the Royal Marines branch of the Royal Navy and followed his grandfather into the “Senior Service”. Sadly he never knew his grandfather because he was killed when the ship he was skippering, the HMS Montrose, was sunk during the Battle of Coronel off the coast of Chile in 1914.

Brandt enjoyed bobsleighing and was a member of the 4-men Great Britain I crew that finished 12th overall at the 1956 Cortina Winter Olympics. Brandt also went with the 4-men GB team to compete in the 1957 World Championships at St. Moritz. Brandt died suddenly at St. Albans hospital 1964 at the age of 29
