Biography

Ice hockey forward Robert “Bob” Forhan spent two years in the Junior Ontario Hockey Association with the Guelph Biltmores from 1953 through 1955 and split the following season between the Biltmores and his first senior level team, the Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen. He then spent three seasons with the Sudbury Wolves of the Northern Ontario Hockey Association prior to returning to the Dutchmen and joining them at the 1960 Winter Olympics as they represented Canada in ice hockey. At the tournament he played in six matches, scored one goal, and took home a silver medal. It would be the first of many years spent abroad for Forhan. From 1960 through 1962 he was signed with the Greensboro Generals of the Eastern Hockey League, although he suited up for a few games with the Cleveland Barons of the American Hockey League in each season. He began the 1962-1963 season with the Dutchmen, but was also recruited for the nascent Canadian National Team at its founding in 1963. He had an unsuccessful Olympic run with the national team in 1964, when they played fourth in the tournament, but was the team’s top goal scorer and won a World Championship bronze medal that year as the tie-breaking rules were different between the two organizations. The team failed to medal at the 1965 World Championships and Forhan took the following season off. When he returned in 1966 he joined the Orillia Pepsi-Colas of the Senior Ontario Hockey League and played with them until midway through the 1967-1968 season, at which point he was transferred to the Toronto Marlboros. After a final year with the Barrie Flyers he hung up his skates for good in 1969. After his retirement he taught high school and served on the town council, and later as mayor (1970-1978) for Newmarket, Ontario prior to serving as the chairman of the region of York.
