Biography

Forward Mike Goodman was a member of the Manitoba Senior Hockey League’s Selkirk Fishermen prior to joining the Winnipeg Falcons in 1919. He scored a hat trick in Game 1 of the team’s 1920 Allan Cup victory and accompanied them to that year’s summer Olympic ice hockey tournament. There he helped bring home a gold medal, scoring three goals in just as many games played. He turned professional in 1925, joining the Duluth Hornets in 1925, one season before they joined the newly founded American Hockey League in 1926. He remained in the league through 1938, suiting up for several years each with the Hornets, the Kansas City Pla-Mors/Greyhounds, and the Wichita Skyhawks. He retired in 1939 after winning the Tropical Hockey League’s championship with the Coral Gables Seminoles as a player-coach during the league’s only season of existence. He then worked at the Coral Gables Laundry until his 1981 retirement and was enshrined as an Honoured Member into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame. Also active as a speed skater (he was a North American champion in 1920), he was the last surviving member of the 1920 gold medal-winning squad when he died in July 1991 at the age of 93.
