Biography

Josef Göbl’s ice hockey career took off in 1926 while he was a student. Nationally he played for Wiener EV and EK Engelmann in Wien (Vienna). With the Austrian team he won a bronze medal at the 1931 World Championships and gold medals at the European Championships in 1927 and 1931. Ertl competed at the 1928 and 1936 Winter Olympics. In total, Göbl made 22 appearances at major international tournaments.

In 1937 he became manager of the Houtrusthallen ice rink in The Hague, and in the 1940/41 season he coached the Mannheimer ERC in Germany. Göbl also acted as a hockey referee. He later worked as a businessman in Wien, representing sporting goods companies like Fred Perry and Slazenger. He also became a successful tennis player and coach.
