Biography

Ray Russell was a sergeant in the US Marines at the time of the 1972 Olympics. Russell was AAU Junior Champion in 1969 and 1970, and won the 1969 Interservice Championships. In 1971 Russell also won a gold medal at the Pan American Games as a light-heavyweight. He was a career Marine, retiring in 1981 as a gunnery sergeant, and never turned professional. Russell later settled in Omaha, Nebraska and worked as a security officer at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
