Matti Karumaa played ice hockey at Hämeenlinnan Tarmo from 1942 until 1959 where he became one of the best players in the country. With the team Karumaa won the Finnish championship in 1948 and 1949, and was the top goal scorer in the league for four consecutive years (1949–52). He played in 56 matches for the national team including the 1949 World Championships and the 1952 Oslo Olympics. Karumaa retired from the sport in 1959 and was inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame in 1985.
