Austrian bobsledder Peter Kienast competed at the 1984 Sarajevo and 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. He took part in both the two- and four-man events on both occasions. In the two-men bob he partnered Christian Mark, finishing 13th and eighth, respectively. With the four-men bob Austria II he placed 11th in 1984 and sixth with Austria I in 1988. At World Championships, Kienast won the silver medal with the four-men bob in 1986 and his greatest moment came in 1990 when he won the European Championships, also with the four-men crew. Kienast had already won the bronze medal at the 1986 and 1989 Europeans.
Kienast ran a bobsledding school at Innsbruck and became chief national coach of the USA team in 1991 until his death due to cancer. Meinhard Nehmer became his successor.
