Biography

Terry Kubicka was an American singles skater known as the only skater to have performed a legal backflip in competition, which he did at the 1976 Winter Olympics. After he successively landed the jump, it was banned as both too dangerous, and because it violated the figure skating principle of landing on one skate. Kubicka was US Novice champion in 1971 and US Junior champion in 1972. He was second at the US Championships in 1974 and 1975 and won the title in 1976. At the World Championships he placed 12th in 1974, 7th in 1975, and 6th in 1976. He later became a figure skating judge and is an ISU International Technical Specialist. Kubicka graduated from California Polytechnic State and later from the veterinary school at U California at Davis, and practiced as a veterinarian.
