Biography

Andreas Kunz won the bronze medal at the 1968 Grenoble Olympics but was forced to end his athletic career due to political pressure, as he had good contacts with his former teammate Ralph Pöhland. Pöhland had fled to West Germany on 19 January 1968 but could not start at the Olympics because the East German sports administrators would not allow him to compete for West Germany. As it was closely after the 1968 Winter Games, East German administrators discovered that Kunz still had contacts with Pöhland, and he was barred from his sport club, SV Dynamo Klingenthal. Kunz then returned to his hometown of Leipzig, where he worked as a sports officer. After reunification he had a brief career as a coach in sports shooting.
