Biography

After studying languages at the University of Kharkov in Ukraine, Aleksey Butowsky entered a military career. He attended the Officer School in Poltava and the Engineers Academy, and then taught at the St. Petersburg Military Gymnasium (GUWUS) from 1857-71, where he wrote several books on various subjects. Butowsky made a tour of gymnastic and fencing schools in Europe in 1892 and then published Sport in France. During this tour he met Pierre de Coubertin and was invited to the Sorbonne Congress. In 1896 Butowsky made another European tour, and in 1897 he was promoted to General. He was one of the original IOC Members, staying on the Committee until December 1900. He did attend the 1905 and 1910 Olympic Congresses, representing the GUWUS.
