Biography

Sidney Dawes became President of the Canadian Olympic Association (COA) and joined the IOC in the same year, 1947, filling a Canadian seat that had been vacant during World War II. He served as President of the COA from 1947-53, after serving as President of the Canadian Ski Association (1945-47) and President of the Canadian Lawn Tennis Association. Dawes graduated from McGill University with a degree in engineering in 1910 and served in World War I in France as a captain in the Royal Canadian Artillery, where he was twice wounded, receiving the Millitary Cross for gallantry. He entered the construction business and eventually became President and Chairman of Atlas Construction Company, later turning the company over to his son-in-law, John Bourne. Dawes was a member of the IOC from 1947-67, then serving as an Honorary Member until his death. During his time on the IOC he attended 23 of 26 IOC Sessions.
