Biography

Svetomir Đukić was a founding member of the Serbian Olympic Committee in 1910 and was co-opted onto the IOC in November 1912. After World War I his mandate switched to Yugoslavia and he served on the IOC until 1949. In World War I Đukić fought as a leader of the Comitadges, and led troops that killed as many as 50,000 enemies. In World War II he resisted the Germans but eventually withdrew to the mountains in March 1941 and continued to fight as a partisan. After the War, Đukić was an avowed enemy of Tito, and for this, and articles he wrote expressing his opposition, he was imprisoned in Münster on September 1947. Many IOC Members wrote letters to help secure his release which occurred on 15 May 1948. Because of his tenuous situation in Yugoslavia, he lived out his life in Germany.
