Biography

Alex Gilady was a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 1994 until his death in 2022. Gilady studied at the Naval College, Mevo’ot Yam, Michmoret in Israel and then began a career as a journalist and sportscaster, although in 2007 he received an honorary doctorate from Haifa University. He worked for NBC in the United States, serving as a vice-president (1981-96) and senior vice-president, starting in 1996, of NBC Sports. He was a founder, President, and CEO of Keshet Broadcasting in Israel.

In sports administration Gilady was chair of the IAAF television commission from 1985-2008 and was made honorary chair for life after 2008. He served as chair of the FIBA TV council from 2004-19. He was awarded seven Emmy Awards for Olympic broadcasting with NBC. In 1977 he received the highest award from the Israeli Broadcasting Association for producing a documentary of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat’s first visit to Jerusalem. That year he also received the Israeli Man of the Year Award as the first Israeli to broadcast from Egypt.

With the IOC Gilady served on numerous commissions, as follows: Radio and Television (1984-2015), Coordination for the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad Athens 2004 (1998-2004), Coordination for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad Beijing 2008 (2002-08), Coordination for the Games of the XXX Olympiad London 2012 (2005-12), Coordination for the Games of the XXXI Olympiad Rio 2016 (2010-16), International Relations (2014-15), Public Affairs and Social Development through Sport (2015-22), Communications (2015-22), Coordination for the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad Paris 2024 (2017-22); Vice-Chair of the Coordination Commission for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad Tokyo 2020 (2013-21); and he was a Member of the Board of directors of Olympic Channel Services S.L., Spain from 2015-22.
