Biography

Thomas Thomassen Heftye was a military attaché in Paris when he first met Pierre de Coubertin. Heftye returned to Oslo where he had been named Director of the Telephone and Telegraph Office Committee in 1906. De Coubertin named him to the IOC in May 1907, but Heftye served for only a bit over one year, resigning in July 1908 when he was appointed Norwegian Minister of Defense. He was also President of the Norwegian Olympic Committee, resigning that post in 1912. Hefty was President of the Norwegian Rambling Association from 1918 until his death in a train accident in 1921.
