Biography

František Kroutil was highly cultured with a bachelor of arts degree, a law degree, and fluency in six languages. He was Secretary-General of the Czechoslovakian Olympic Committee from 1958-74, and led the International Department of the Czechoslovak Physical Culture and Sports Association (ČSTV) from 1966-72. He was largely responsible for the ČSTV receiving the Olympic Cup in 1976. Kroutil was an active mountaineer and wrote several books about mountaineering in the High Tatra (Vysoké Tatry) Mountains. He was co-opted onto the IOC in October 1965, and remained a member until his resignation in October 1981. During his tenure, he never missed an IOC Session.
