Biography

Ignacy Matuszewski studied philosophy at Jagiellonian University after which he served in the Russian Army from 1914-17. He then held several high positions in the Polish Ministry of Military Affairs. He became Military Attaché to Rome in 1924 but in 1926 returned to Poland as Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs, a post he held for two years. He later served as Polish Minister in Budapest and from 1929-31 was State Treasurer. When Germany declared war in September 1939, Matuszewski was given responsibility for evacuating the Polish Bank.
