Biography

Olaf Poulsen was a speed skater as a youth with Oslo IL and was named to the board of the Norwegian Skating Federation in 1966. He was made vice-president in 1968 and served as its President from 1969-73. He became a board member of the International Skating Union (ISU) in 1971, was elected vice-president in 1977 and was President from 1980-94.

Poulsen was co-opted onto the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1992. He served into 1994, retiring concurrently from the ISU and the IOC after the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics. For his contributions to skating he was given the Norwegian Skating Federation’s highest award, the Gullmerket.
