Biography

Borislav Stanković was a basketball player, then a basketball administrator and is best known for opening Olympic and international basketball to all professionals, including the NBA, in the early 1990s. Stanković played for Crvena Zvezda from 1946-48, for Železničar Beograd from 1948-50, and then for Partizan from 1950-53. He then became a coach from 1953-69, coaching both OKK Beograd and Pallacanestro Cantù. Stanković also studied veterinary medicine and worked as veterinary inspector for meat control in Beograd.

Stanković first moved into sports administration with the Yugoslavian Basketball Federation and then was secretary-general of FIBA from 1976-2002. He was made an IOC Member in 1988 and served until 2006, after which he was made an Honorary Member. He served on multiple IOC Commissions as follows – Olympic Movement; Coordination for the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992; in Atlanta in 1996; Preparation of the Centennial Olympic Congress; Eligibility; Olympic Programme (summer); Olympic Movement; Enquiry for the Games of the XXVII Olympiad in 2000; Centennial Olympic Congress Study – Congress of Unity; Women and Sport; and the Coordination Commission for the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens in 2004.
