Laura Arraya

Laura Arraya was a Peruvian tennis player. Arraya played professionally from 1981 to 1994 and achieved her career-best singles rank of 14 in the world in March 1990. Arraya was born in Córdoba, Argentina, but moved to Peru when she was seven. In 1984, she married Chilean tennis player Heinz Gildemeister, although they later divorced. In the same year, Arraya competed in the singles tournament at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics when tennis was a demonstration sport. Despite being seeded number three for the tournament, she lost in the first round to Renata Šašak of Yugoslavia. Arraya was a mother when she won the OTB Open in Schenectady, New York, in 1989.

Although Arraya had little success at Grand Slam tournaments, she managed to break into the top 20 world rankings. Her best Grand Slam result was reaching the quarter-finals at the Wimbledon Championships in 1991. After her retirement she became a director of a tennis academy in Lima. Her brother Pablo also played tennis.
