Biography

John Schommer played in the basketball tournament that was held during the 1904 St. Louis Olympics. He represented the Chicago Central YMCA that finished second in the tournament.

Schommer played college basketball for the University of Chicago where he was a four-time All-American and led the Maroons to three straight Big 10 Championships in 1907-09. Schommer was named the Helms Foundation College Basketball Player of the Year for 1908-09. He earned 12 letters at Chicago in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He later coached the Chicago basketball team in 1910-11. Schommer was one of the first four players inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1959. He is also a member of the College Basketball Hall of Fame and the University of Chicago Hall of Fame.
