Gardner Mallonee

Gard Mallonee attended the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and Johns Hopkins University, from where he graduated in 1928 with a degree in civil engineering. Twenty-four years later, he added a master’s degree in education. Mallonee started playing football and basketball, but favoured lacrosse, at which he was named All-American in 1928, and also represented the United States in the Olympic lacrosse demonstration that same year. After leaving Johns Hopkins, he played for New York Crescent AC, and Johns Hopkins Olympic Club Team, until 1932. Mallonee was also a top football player, captaining the 1926-27 Johns Hopkins team. In 1931, he took up basketball again.

After working for New York Central Railroad for two years, he started teaching mathematics at Baltimore’s Park School. During this time, he started coaching at Johns Hopkins and became a full-time teacher of physical education in 1935. In 1949, he moved to Forest Park High School in Maryland. He held various official positions within lacrosse, including president of the USILA. His son Steve “Lucky” Mallonee, like his father, was also named an All-American lacrosse player while attending Johns Hopkins.
