Biography

Peter Reynolds grew up in his father’s grocery store and went to Mt. Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore. After graduation he attended Johns Hopkins, where he studied engineering. There he excelled in football as well as lacrosse. During World War II Reynolds was taken prisoner by the Japanese when the American troops defending the Philippines were forced to surrender. He survived the Bataan Death March through the jungle and a few pre-printed postcards reached his family from his POW camp. In 1944 about 1,800 POWs were boarded on a Japanese vessel to be transported to Japan. The ship was the Arisan Maru, which was sunk by an American torpedo, not knowing that the ship was full of Americans. According to the records Reynolds died on board the ship, with the location given as the Bashi Straits, South China Sea, about 250 km southwest of the Formosan coast, in the controversial sea area between China/Taiwan and the Philippines.
