Biography

German road cyclist Jens Voigt participated in three consecutive Olympic road races from Sydney 2000 until Beijing 2008 without any remarkable results. During his career he acquired the reputation of being a very aggressive and popular cyclist. From 2005-07 Voigt was elected Cyclist of the Year in Germany. He was also known for his consequent anti-doping attitude.

From 1998-2014 Voigt participated in 17 Tour de France and finished the race 14 times, winning one stage in both 2001 and 2006. After his 17th participation in 2014, at the age of 42, he retired from professional cycling. In 2006 and 2008-09, he also participated in the Giro d’Italia. Voigt’s greatest moments came in 1999, 2004, and 2007-09 when he won the two-day stage race Critérium International, and the Deutschland Tour in 2006 and 2007. He also won the Tour de Pologne in 2008.

After his active career Voigt became a consultant with several professional cycling teams, commentator with the US TV channel NBC, and brand ambassador for cycle manufacturers. Voigt raised six children and lived in Berlin.
