Cyril Shiner

Briton Cyril Shiner was a major silversmith and industrial designer, but also painted. He learned his trade at the Birmingham School of Jewellery & College of Arts and Crafts, where he later served as a gifted teacher. One of his teachers was Bernard Cuzner. Shiner also studied at the Royal College of Art in London.

He was most famous for his silver tableware. Shiner also designed an earlier version of the King’s Vase for the Royal Ascot, which was then repurposed and replaced by a design by Geoffrey Holden. The submitted drawing of the bowl shown in the 1948 catalog is described as Full Size Design for an Olympic Trophy, “in silver, chased and engraved, parcel-gilt, exhibited by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths”.
