Biography

Peter Stebbing was an accomplished cricketer at Marlborough College before he studied at the Ruskin College of Art, Oxford. From the 1940s to the 1960s, he worked as a trompe d’oeil painter, muralist and interior designer in London. His work included major assignments for the interiors of first-class London hotels like the Mayfair and the Waldorf. His patronage also included many society names of the time. In his later life, he acquired motor neuron disease. His wife, Pauline Corinna Margery Stebbing (neé Sitwell, 1916-2010), was also a talented artist and designer, writer, poet, skier, dancer and campaigner. The embroidery Olympic Games was produced based on Stebbing’s submitted design by the textile company Wemyss Weavecraft in Dundee in Scotland.
