Charlotte Berend-Corinth

Charlotte Berend-Corinth was the sister of writer Alice Berend (1875-1938) and the wife of the famous painter Lovis Corinth (1858-1925). Their daughter Wilhelmine (1909-2001) later became an actress and author. Charlotte studied at various colleges as well as at the private painting school of her future husband in Berlin. In 1926 she became a member of the Berlin Secession and edited and published the autobiography of her already-deceased husband. One year later she opened her own Art School in Berlin.

In 1939, Berend-Corinth fled from Nazi Germany via Switzerland to New York following her son Thomas. Only a few months later she settled in Santa Barbara, California, where she painted landscapes of local sceneries. Her daughter followed her in 1948 when Berend-Corinth returned to New York. In 1958 she published the catalog raisonné of her husband.

In 2008, the Deutsche Post dedicated a stamp to her husband, showing a portrait of his sleeping wife Charlotte. Two of the submitted paintings are known to have been confiscated by the Nazis: Boxer and The Boxer Adolf Wiegert. The full title of the latter was Der Boxer (Der Exmeister Adolf Wiegert in der Kampfphase) (The Boxer (The ex-champion Adolf Wiegert in the fighting phase)). It was a painting in oil on canvas in the format 160 x 75 cm from 1927. Wiegert (1894-1930) was a German professional boxer and middleweight champion in the mid-1920s. He died at the age of only 35 following an operation.
