Biography

Paul Bindel studied in Düsseldorf at the School of Arts and Crafts. After serving in World War I, he was trained as a drawing teacher. In 1930, he was then appointed to the local Academy of Visual Arts for the first time.

During the Nazi dictatorship, Bindel, who was a draftsman, painter, and sculptor, some of his earlier works were considered “degenerate”. Later, he was allowed again to take part in major exhibitions. He was drafted into military service and became a Russian prisoner of war in 1945. After World War II he was again appointed professor at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf. He became an experienced watercolor painter who remained committed to objectivity and painted genre photos and flower still lifes.
