Biography

Dutch sculptor Jan Kriege was the son of a clog producer and took over his father’s company at the age of 15. Ten years later he started an education as a goldsmith and also learned drawing, beating and floating, assembling and embossing. In 1919, he graduated from The Hague Academy. He did a lot of commission work, often for Catholic churches, and also produced the plaque of the post office in Hilversum. In 1940, a large part of his work was destroyed in an air raid on Rotterdam. During the German occupation in World War II Kriege had difficulty working, as he refused to join the German-friendly Chamber of Culture, giving him little material submitted by them. Jan Kriege’s contribution Tennis was the tombak (brass) sculpture of a female tennis player.
