Biography

Marja Obrębska was a painter, graphic artist and teacher. Born in what is now Ukraine, she first lived in Kyiv and later in Warszawa. There she studied at the School of Fine Arts, training under graphic artist Władysław Skoczylas, amongst others, graduating in graphic design in 1931. Around 1936 she became interested in stage design. Obrębska became a member of the group of artists “Ryt” and the Association of Polish Graphic Artists. Between 1935-39, she wrote about art in the monthly magazine “Arkady”. After having married Slavist, and linguist, Zdzisław Stieber, she was a teacher at the Institute of Fine Arts in Lviv and the Higher School of Fine Arts in Lodz. After World War II, in 1946 she founded and managed a textile printing plant at the Faculty of Textiles in Łódź. There, she was appointed associate professor in 1957.
