Biography

Polish sculptor Franciszek Strynkiewicz received an Honorable Mention at the 1948 Art Competitions in London for his bronze At the Finishing Line in the category Sculpturing, Statues. It is now in the Warszawa Sports Museum. Strynkiewicz initially studied pedagogy and worked briefly as a teacher. From 1924 he studied in Warszawa at the Academy of Fine Arts and belonged to the artist groups “Forma” and “Blok” in the 1930s. In Warszawa he also taught as a professor from 1946-63 and served as rector of the art academy at times. Strynkiewicz lived to be 103-years-old. He mostly created figures, portraits and monuments, among others the monument in the cemetery of the Nazi concentration camp Treblinka. Initially, he preferred wood as a material, later also worked in stone, ceramic and bronze. Strynkiewicz served as a member of the Polish Land Forces during World War I and through 1920. During World War II he was a civilian prisoner of war in work camps.
