Karol Tchorek

Polish sculptor, art dealer and art collector Karol Tchorek studied at the Municipal School of Decorative Arts and Painting in Warszawa, and continued at the capital’s School of Fine Arts. In his youth he participated as a volunteer in the Polish-Soviet War. During World War II two of his studios were destroyed. Tchorek’s main work after the war was the design of plaques used to commemorate places where battles or executions took place during the German occupation of Warszawa. From 1949 onwards the city placed around 200 plaques, made according to his designs, in places where executions and fighting had taken place.

His son Marius (1939-2004) became an art critic and psychotherapist. His daughter-in-law Katy Bentall, wife of Marius, founded the Tchorek-Bentall Foundation in 2007, a non-profit organization with the aim of preserving and promoting the intellectual work of her partner in life and art and his father Karol.
