Biography

American painter Charles Morris Young appeared with his paintings at the 1928 Amsterdam and the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics in the Art Competitions. He was one of the leading impressionist landscape painters of the first half of 20th century. He was also known for his golfing, equestrian, and hunting scenes. Young was born into a wealthy family and did not need to sell his paintings to survive, but was still a member of the international art community.

Young was a student and award-winning artist at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and later, after having worked as an art teacher, at the Académie Colarossi in Paris. Further spells in France followed until 1905. From 1917 he lived in Radnor near Philadelphia and spent the summers in Maine. His paintings won medals and were exhibited not only in shows and galleries across the United States but in places such as Buenos Aires; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Budapest, Hungary, and Santiago, Chile. In 1962, a fire destroyed his home and around 200 of his paintings. Although he tried to repaint many of them, he died only two years later.

Young submitted a total of five oil paintings and three etchings. On Darby Creek was featured in the 1928 catalog. Darby Creek, a tributary of the Delaware River in Pennsylvania, is a motif that appears in several of his paintings. The works submitted in 1932 were created during invitations to hunt in the rural area west of Philadelphia. This is implied by the place names such as White Horse and Echo Valley. Huntsman and Hounds (Echo Valley) was painted starting in 1929, Brown’s Meadow in 1932 (both in oil on canvas, 63.5 x 76, 2 cm). Similar motifs showed his etchings, including The Hounds at White Horse and White Horse Blacksmith Shop from 1925/26 about 20 x 23 cm in size. These possibly served as templates for his paintings.
