German rower Jan Herzog placed 11th with the coxless fours at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and sixth partnering Tobias Kühne in the coxless pairs at the 2004 Athens Games. In 2008, Herzog won the University Boat Race representing Oxford. Internationally, he won a bronze medal with the lightweight coxed fours at the 1997 World Championships, and in 1999, won the Grand Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta.
Herzog was a cousin of non-Olympian rowers Joel and Irady El-Qalqili. The latter married Kerstin Kowalski. At German nationals, Herzog won the coxless pairs title in 2001 and 2003-04, the coxed pairs in 2004, and the eights in 1999. He also won the lightweight coxless fours and the eights titles, both in 1997.
