Biography

Don Hawgood, a member of Toronto’s Balmy Beach Canoe Club, made his only international appearance for Canada in the C-2 10,000 event at the 1952 Summer Olympics. After 54 minutes of grueling competition, the race for gold came down to a sprint between Hawgood and his partner Ken Lane, and Georges Turlier and Jean Laudet of France. Going into the final stretch, it appeared as if the Canadians had won it, but Turlier and Laudet pulled ahead at the end, finishing just 1.6 seconds ahead of Hawgood and Lane, who were nearly twenty seconds ahead of the bronze medalists, Egon Drews and Wilfried Soltau of Germany.
