Biography

Helmut Mayer won three major international silver medals, with Olympic silver in 1988 at Calgary in the Super-G, a World Championship silver in giant slalom at Vail/Beaver Creek in 1989, and a silver in giant slalom at the 1984 World Junior Championships at Sugarloaf, Maine. He won one World Cup race, a giant slalom at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia in December 1987. During his career, which ended in 1993, Mayer had six podiums in World Cup races, with two Super-G and two GS bronzes, and a bronze in parallel slalom, in addition to his one victory. Earlier in his career, in Europa Cup racing, Mayer won the giant slalom and Super-G in 1987 and was overall champion that year, as well. He was a four-time Austrian champion, winning the Super-G in 1989 and giant slalom titles in 1986, 1991, and 1993.
