Ed Meddings joined the Royal Air Force in 1939, at the age of 16, and served during World War II for the duration of the conflict. Afterwards he stayed in the military as an instructor and was one of eight Air Force men selected to represent Great Britain in the four-man bobsleigh event at the 1948 Winter Olympics. There he finished fifteenth and last in the event, alongside Richard Jeffrey, George Powell-Shedden, and James Iremonger. Shortly thereafter, Meddings participated in the Berlin Airlift, delivering supplies to the city following a Soviet blockade. He then spent the remainder of his career in Britain, Kenya, Germany, Nigeria, and Singapore, in various military positions, prior to his retirement. His athletic career also included recreational cricket, and in his later years he worked as a groundsman at the Hinton Cricket Club.
