Biography

Kunio Nando was one of the many speed skaters from Manchuria. While attending Waseda University, he competed in the 500 m and 5,000 m events of the 1936 Winter Olympics. During his trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, he also competed at the European Championships in Oslo, and the World Championship in Davos. Three years later, he won the 1,500 m at the 1939 All Japan Speed Skating Championships. In 1940, Nando succeeded over this distance at the Student Championships. Twice, he was a member of the victorious Waseda 2,000 m relay team (1937, 1939) and earned a couple of second and third places.

Later, Nando served as manager of the Japanese skating team at the 1956 Cortina d’Ampezzo and the 1960 Squaw Valley Winter Olympics; and at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, he was head of the Japanese team. Nando also acted as chairman of the Japan Skating Federation and of the Japan Curling Association. In 2000, he received the Olympic Order in Silver before he died from pneumonia at the age of 94.
