Biography

Jiří Novák was a Czechoslovakian center known as a good two-way player who primarily played with Tesla Pardubice in his home league. He was with Pardubice from 1962-70 and 1972-81, moving to HC Dukla Jihlava for he 1970-72 seasons. He finished out his career with a few seasons in Switzerland (Lausanne HC 1981-83), France (Villard-de-Lans 1983-84), and Italy (SG Cortina 1984-85). Novák won two Czechoslovakian League titles with HC Dukla Jihlava (1971-72) and one with Tesla Pardubice in 1973. He scored 255 goals in 480 league games in his career in Czechoslovakia.

Internationally Novák played at the 1976 and 1980 Winter Olympics, winning a silver medal in 1976. He also helped Czechoslovakia to a runner-up finish at the 1976 Canada Cup. He played on six World Championship teams (1973, 1975-79), winning golds in 1976-77, silvers in 1975 and 1978-79, and a bronze in 1973. He was capped 160 times, scoring 76 international goals. After his playing retirement he settled in Pardubice where he became a restaurant and hotel owner.
