Biography

East German bobsledder Detlef Richter won a bronze medal at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics in the four-man bob together with Horst Schönau, [Roland Wetzig] (/athletes/98918) and brakeman Andreas Kirchner. Eight years later he placed eighth in the same event. At the World Championships Richter added three silvers (two-man 1985, four-man 1979 and 1985) and two bronze medals (two-man 1986, four-man 1983), while at the European Championships he won another three silvers (two-man 1984, four-man 1982 and 1984) and one bronze medal (two-man 1986). He started his athletics career as a pole vaulter.
