Maciel achieved a career-best singles ranking of 35 in the world in June 1986, and a doubles ranking of 157 in the world in September 1985. Maciel reached his only ATP singles final in June 1986 at the Athína Open where he lost to Henrik Sundström of Sweden in straight sets. In 1986 he had his best Grand Slam performances when he reached the second round at the US Open and the fourth round of the French Open.

Maciel competed at three consecutive Olympics; 1984 Los Angeles, 1988 Seoul, and 1992 Barcelona.
