Biography

Prior to joining the Ontario Hockey League’s London Knights in 1985 ice hockey defenseman Brad Schlegel had suited up for minor hockey with the Kitchener Dutchmen (1984-1985) and junior B hockey with the Kitchener Ranger B’s (1984-1985). He left the Knights in 1988, opting to playing exclusively with the Canadian national men’s ice hockey team, during which time he won silver medals at the 1991 World Championships and the 1992 Winter Olympics. At the latter tournament he played in eight matches and scored one goal. He split the 1991-1992 season between the National Hockey League’s Washington Capitals, the American Hockey League’s Baltimore Slapjacks, and the Canadian team with a non-medaling appearance at the 1993 World Championships. He divided the following year between the same three leagues, this time with the NHL’s Calgary Flames and the AHL’s Saint John Flames. At the 1994 Winter Olympics he played in eight games and took home a silver medal from the ice hockey tournament.

Schlegel won his final medal with Team Canada in 1995, a bronze at that year’s World Championships. From 1994 until the end of his career in 2007 he suited up with European teams, beginning with one season with Austria’s EC Villacher SV. He skated for the team in the Alpenliga, which consisted of clubs from Austria, Italy, and Slovenia, until it folded in 1999, and stayed with them when they became part of the International Ice Hockey League for the 1999-2000 season. He had skated for Germany’s EC Hannover during the 1995-1996 season, but joined the country’s clubs in earnest in 2000 and played for the Schwenninger Wild Wings (2000-2001), Kolner Haie (2001-2006), and the Hannover Scorpions (2006-2007).
