Biography

William Speechly was born in Canada as the son of the famous doctor Harry Martindale Speechly, but William represented Great Britain as an ice hockey goaltender. He came to England in 1927 to study at Cambridge University, where he attended St John’s College. He was an ice hockey Blue and also captain of the Cambridge team. Speechly obtained his MA in 1924. At the 1928 Winter Olympics, he played in three games. He also appeared in one game at the 1930 World Championship.

During World War II Speechly fought in the Canadian Army. For many years, Speechly worked as a history teacher at the Gordon Bell High School in Winnipeg. After his death, his collection of research materials in local history was donated to the Manitoba Provincial Archives.
