Biography

Jesús Suárez-Valgrande was a Spanish cross-country skier. Suárez-Valgrande finished in second place at the 1934 Spanish cross-country skiing championships. He went on to win the national title in 1935 and 1936. Suárez-Valgrande competed in the 18 kilometres at the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Olympics. He finished in 63rd place. Suárez-Valgrande was also the flag bearer for Spain at the Opening Ceremony at the 1936 Games. By 1945, Suárez-Valgrande had won seven national titles, and retired later that year.

After his retirement Suárez-Valgrande held several sports-related roles including the President of the Northern Ski Federation (1946–77), President of the Astur-Leonesa Sports Society, and the national President of the Nordic Ski Committee. Suárez-Valgrande was awarded with the silver medal for Sports Merit and the Knight’s Cross. In 1978 a bronze bust of Suárez-Valgrande was constructed at the ski resort in Valgrande-Pajares.
