Biography

László Szalay started his sports career as a skier with BBTE in the early 1930s. Between 1933 and 1958, he won a total of three individual and seven team national championships both in Alpine and Nordic disciplines.

Between 1936 and 1939 Szalay was the member of the Hungarian national team. His 19th place in the Alpine combined discipline at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Olympics was one of the most outstanding results in Alpine skiing for Hungary in the 20th century. In 1940, he was awarded the title of Ski King of Hungary. Unfortunately, World War II ended his promising sports career.

From 1945 Szalay actively worked on the re-launch of skiing sport in Hungary. For three years he was head coach of ski jumpers and then Alpine coach. In 1948, he participated at the Winter Olympics in St. Moritz as one of the leaders of the Hungarian team. Szalay studied economics and worked in the oil industry, working in Zala County from 1938, and then continued his career in Budapest as an employee of the Hungarian-American Oil Industry Company (MAORT), mainly in financial positions.
