Biography

East German flatwater canoeist Peter Hempel had the following podium finishes at the Flatwater World Championships: gold medals in 1981 in the K4-1,000, in 1983 and 1985 with the K4-500; silver medals in the 1982 K1-500 and the K4-1,000 and the 1983 K4-1,000; and bronze medals in the 1978-79 K1-500, and in 1985 with the K4-1,000. He also came in fifth with Harry Nolte in the K2-1,000 at the 1980 Moskva Summer Games.

In 1978 and 1979 Hempel also won East German titles in the K2-1,000 and from 1981-84 and 1987 won K4-1,000 titles. In K1-500 he won national titles in 1978-79 and 1982, while in 1981-82 he was on the winning K2-500 team. Finally, in 1983 and 1985 he won K4-500 national titles.
