Biography

East German flatwater canoeist Jörg Schmidt won the gold medal at the 1982 ICF Flatwater Canoe World Championships in the C-1 1,000 event. In 1988, at the Seoul Olympics he collected a silver medal. Due to the Soviet-led boycott of the 1984 Los Angeles Games, he could not participate.

Domestically, Schmidt won five East German national titles. He was married to Birgit Fischer-Schmidt from 1984 until 1993 when they divorced. Schmidt was a trained electrician employed by the Nationale Volksarmee (National People’s Army).
